NOVELIST DAVID SHIELDS TO SPEAK AT SLU

CANTON -- David Shields, author of two novels, will speak and read
from his recent work on Wednesday, November 8, at 8 p.m. in the Common
Room of Sykes Residence Hall at St. Lawrence
University. The event, part of the St. Lawrence
Writers Series, is open to the public, free of charge.
A former St. Lawrence English professor,
Shields has also published two non-fiction works
and a collection of linked stories, titled A
Handbook for Drowning. His most recent book,
Black Planet: Facing Race During an NBA Season,
was a finalist for the National Book Critics
Circle's award in criticism and the PEN West
Award in creative non-fiction. Black Planet used
the Seattle Supersonics' 1994-5 season as a vehicle
for exploring how white people -- including and
especially Shields -- think and talk about black heroes,
scapegoats and bodies.
Shields is a professor in the University of Washington's
program in creative writing and lives in Seattle.
