George Mitchell's Mediations Topic For SLU Talk

CANTON - Shelley M. Deane, assistant professor of government at Bowdoin College, will give a talk titled "Belfast, Bethlehem, and Baghdad: George Mitchell's Mediation Mechanisms" on Thursday, March 25, at 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall, Room 218, at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

In this talk, Deane considers Mitchell's mediation mechanisms, in both Northern Ireland and the Middle East, and considers whether it is the man or the mechanisms he adopts that make effective mediation happen. Mitchell, former U.S. Senator from Maine, is the American special envoy to the Middle East for the Obama administration.

Deane completed her Ph.D. in government at the London School of Economics in 2004. With interest in both Ireland and the Middle East, Deane has focused on the role of factions within paramilitary-to-political organizations and the role of third-party mediation in ending conflicts.
