SESQUICENTENNIAL REVIEW AT SLU APRIL 8

CANTON - Music and dance from the past 150 years will be celebrated in "Sounds of St. Lawrence: A Sesquicentennial Review" on Saturday, April 8, in Eben Holden. The event is open to the public, free of charge, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the chartering of St. Lawrence, in 1856.

At 7:30 p.m., the Laurentian Parlor Singers will perform a review of informal singing at the University, throughout its history. It will include Greek songs; "The Scarlet and the Brown"; St. Lawrence's alma mater; popular songs from the past; and gospel and original music. The Laurentian Parlor Singers is a small group of students from the Laurentian Singers, directed by Barry Torres.

Following their performance, at about 8 p.m., the St. Lawrence University String Orchestra, directed by Christian Hosmer, will perform dance music from the mid- to late 1800s, including waltzes and polkas by Strauss and Tchaikovsky. Dancing by those in attendance is encouraged; for those wishing to "brush up" on ballroom dance skills prior to the event, a workshop will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. with Todd Moe, in Room 15 of the Griffiths Arts Center.

Before the performances and dancing begin, at 7 p.m., doors will open and visitors are welcome to view a display of objects and photos from the University's history, as well as a display on Canton's bicentennial, provided by Historian Linda Casserly.
