'THE SEA GULL' TO BE PERFORMED AT SLU

CANTON -- Anton Chekhov's play The Sea Gull will be performed
at St. Lawrence University on October 26, 27 and 28 and November
2, 3 and 4, at 8 p.m. in the Edson R. Miles Black Box Theatre, Griffiths
Arts Center. All performances are open to the public, free of charge.
Set in Russia at the end of the 19th century, The Sea Gull tells
the story of a group of family and friends who are spending the languid
summer months on a country estate. The action concerns the interweaving
of their lives with others, and all the romance, intrigue, hopes and
disappointments that this life leads to. It is an absorbing and
compelling tapestry, an evocation of real life and real people and,
ultimately, a deeply moving and revealing human experience.
Director Jonathan Chambers, assistant professor of speech and
theatre, notes that while the play is a drama, "Chekhov's sub-title is
'a comedy in four acts.' I am seeking to find and highlight the comedy
in the piece, as a way of heightening the tragedy of life."
