SLU Speaker To Discuss Palestinian-Israeli Conflict
CANTON - Scholar and author Saree Makdisi will give a talk titled "Entering the Final Stage of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict" on Thursday, December 4, at 8 p.m. in the Common Room of Sykes Residence Hall at St. Lawrence University. The event, part of the Contemporary Issues Forum, is open to the public, free of charge.
Makdisi received the Ph.D. from Duke University. He is the author of Romantic Imperialism: Universal Empire and the Culture of Modernity (Cambridge University Press, 1998), William Blake and the Impossible History of the 1790s (University of Chicago Press, 2003) and Palestine Inside Out: An Everyday Occupation (Norton, 2008). His primary area of research is the culture of modernity, especially as it was consolidated in Britain during the Romantic period, and as it developed in relation to the changing dynamics of British imperialism in the 18th and 19th centuries. Makdisi has also written extensively on the 20th- and 21st-century consequences of 18th- and 19th-century imperialism. He has been especially interested in the cultural politics of the contemporary Arab world.
The Contemporary Issues Forum brings experts and participants in the making of news to campus throughout the academic year.
