CLASSICAL MUSIC FROM CALCUTTA IN CONCERT AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON - A concert of classical music from Calcutta, India, featuring Sima Burman (voice) and Sandip Burman (tabla) will be performed on Tuesday, April 10, at 8 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths Arts Center, at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

It will feature a discussion of the music system of India (Raga and Tala) and how that compares to the western system, as well as performances. The tabla is usually played as a rhythm instrument (Tala), in a very complex cycle. Another instrument, the tabla tarang, will also be played, featuring 12 drums tuned to a melodic scale (Raga). Currently, Sandip Burman is the only touring tabla tarang player in the world.
