St. Lawrence, SUNY Upstate Medical Join To Increase Interest In Rural Medicine
CANTON - St. Lawrence University and SUNY Upstate Medical University (College of Medicine) have begun an early assurance program for students interested in rural medicine. The agreement allows for students accepted into the program to have a place at Upstate Medical University upon successful completion of a degree at St. Lawrence.
Students will be admitted into both St. Lawrence and Upstate Medical University prior to matriculating at St. Lawrence University. To remain in good standing in the program, a set of academic and comportment standards must be maintained. Preference will be given to applicants from a rural setting, who are first-generation college students or from an economic background that makes it less likely they would compete for medical school admission through the traditional route. Preference will also be given to applicants who express a strong desire to practice in an under-served rural area.
The first student to be accepted into the program, Marc Delaney, of Clayton, will enter St. Lawrence as a first-year student in August; he will graduate from Thousand Islands Central School this month. Delaney has participated in educational opportunities presented by the Northern Area Health Education Center, Inc. (NAHEC), including an internship at Samaritan Medical Center, through the NAHEC Health Scholars program.
