St. Lawrence Offers Evening Of Persian Poetry & Music

CANTON - The poetry and music of 13th-century Persian mystic Rumi will be presented at St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, November 3, at 7 p.m. in Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall. The event, part of the Arts Across the Curriculum series, is open to the public, free of charge.

Rumi translator, author and performer Shahram Shiva, world music multi-instrumentalist Rich Goodhart and flutist and multi-instrumentalist John Ragusa bring together the luminous qualities of of Rumi poetry and music.

Shiva incorporates the essence of Rumi's message with performance of the original Persian verses, as well as his own English renditions. Goodhart has written, produced, arranged and engineered seven albums of progressive World Music. Originally a keyboardist, for the past 25 years he has also been a hand drummer and world music practitioner and has studied with master musicians in the U.S., Africa, India, and Indonesia. Ragusa, an improvisational flutist, also performs on a range of instruments, from traditional western flutes to unique wood flutes, pennywhistles, harmonica, jews harp, pocket trumpet, the didgeridoo and the conch shell.
