THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED, AND A NEW DATE AND TIME HAVE NOT YET BEEN SCHEDULED A List 8/29/05 SLU HOSTS LECTURE ON YORUBA ARTIST CANTON – Roslyn Walker, senior curator of the arts of Africa, the Pacific and the Americas and the Margaret McDermott curator of African art at the Dallas Museum of Art, will give a lecture titled "Anonymous Has a Name: Olowe of Ise" on Monday, September 5, at 7 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge. Traditional African artists were not anonymous. Their names were known to the patrons who commissioned works of art and probably to those individuals who saw such works. Their names are unknown to us for several reasons, the most fundamental being that no one asked or was interested in knowing who made the art works. Olowe of Ise (c. 1875-c. 1938) was a Yoruba artist whose fame in Nigeria extended beyond his hometown, ultimately to Europe and America. Walker's illustrated lecture will discuss the artist's unique style and the sculptures he created for his royal patrons, including a recently discovered work. From October 6 through November 3, the exhibition "Cloth Only Wears to Shreds: Yoruba Textiles and Photographs from the Beier Collection" will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence.
