GLOBAL WARMING TOPIC OF ROMER LECTURE AT SLU

CANTON - Global climatologist Stephen Schneider will give the
2003 Alfred Romer Lecture at St. Lawrence University, on the
topic "The Global Warming Debate: Good Science or Bad Politics?,"
on Thursday, April 24, at 8 p.m. in the auditorium (Room 218) of
Hepburn Hall. It is open to the public, free of charge, and
will be followed by an informal reception.
A 1992 MacArthur Fellow, Schneider has done pioneering
modeling work in the fields of atmospheric science and global
climatology, including the relationship of biological systems
to global climate change. His work includes coupling models of
the atmosphere to models of other climatic subsystems such as
oceans, ice or biosphere. Schneider has initiated new research
and policy directions in environmental issues. His current
research interests include climatic change, global warming,
economic implications of global warming mitigation strategies,
food/climate and other environmental/science public policy
issues, public understanding of science and environmental
consequences of nuclear war.
	Schneider has written articles on climatic change signals;
ecology and climate; environmental policy; and global air pollution,
among other topics. He is the author of the 1990 book Global
Warming: Are We Entering the Greenhouse Century?, and in 1991,
Schneider received the American Association for the Advancement of
Science/Westinghouse Award for Public Understanding of Science
and Technology, for furthering public understanding of
environmental science and its implications for public policy.
The Romer Lecture was established to honor the late
Emeritus Professor of Physics Alfred Romer, who had been
associated with St. Lawrence for over 50 years.
