SLU MUSIC DEPARTMENT CELEBRATING LIFE OF RICHARD RODGERS

CANTON - A series of events and performances on campus at 
St. Lawrence University this semester celebrates the 100th anniversary 
of the birth of American composer Richard Rodgers.
	Rodgers (1902-1979) was a prolific songwriter, best known for 
collaborating with lyricists Oscar Hammerstein II and Lorenz Hart on 
some of the best-loved musicals for theatre and screen. 
	The Special Productions Ensemble at St. Lawrence, which each 
year selects a theme or type of music upon which to concentrate, this 
year is focusing on the work of Rodgers. The celebration will 
culminate in the ensemble's public performance.
Events scheduled in the Rodgers Centennial celebration on campus 
include:
	- Sunday, October 6, a screening of the film Evergreen (1934), 
a British musical with music and lyrics by Rodgers and Hart, 2 p.m., 
Gilbert Recital Hall.
	- Sunday, October 27, a screening of The Sweetest Sounds, a 
documentary about Rodgers produced for "The American Masters" series 
on PBS, 2 p.m., Gilbert Recital Hall.
	- Sunday, November 10, a screening of the film Jumbo (1962), 
with music and lyrics by Rodgers and Hart, 2 p.m., Gilbert Recital 
Hall.
	- Wednesday, November 13, "Thou Swell, Thou Witty," a lecture 
by University of North Carolina at Wilmington Professor Philip 
Furia, 7:30 p.m., Gilbert Recital Hall. Among Furia's books on 
American popular music is The Poets of Tin Pan Alley: A History 
of America's Great Lyricists, 1900-1950.
	- Thursday, November 21, "The Blue Moon Radio Hour," a 
performance of the St. Lawrence Special Productions Ensemble, 8 p.m., 
Blackbox Theatre, Griffiths Arts Center.
