MILLION-DOLLAR SCHOLARSHIP FUND ENDOWED AT SLU

CANTON -- A $1 million endowed scholarship has been funded at
St. Lawrence University, through the bequest of an alumni couple.
The Elizabeth Rice Robinson and Charles T. Robinson Endowed
Scholarship has been established at the University with the bequest.
The fund will assist St. Lawrence in providing four new scholarships
a year to eligible students.
Both Robinsons graduated from the University in 1927. Charles
Robinson died in 1990; at that time, Elizabeth Robinson told officials
at St. Lawrence of her intention to establish the fund in honor of her
husband, who had attended with the assistance of scholarship aid.
"I hope this will allow students to attend the University the
same way Robbie did over 60 years ago," Mrs. Robinson said. "We had a
good life together and the University played an important role. It was
his education, involvement in athletics and the generosity of others
that enabled him to ultimately start a successful oil company."
Charles Robinson founded the Fairfield Oil Company, Fairfield,
Connecticut, in 1946; the company later merged with other firms to become
the Fairfield Home Oil Company. He retired in 1968 and the couple moved
to San Diego, California, in 1974. Elizabeth Robinson was a math and English
teacher; she died in April of this year.
