Robert Thacker Appointed To Dana Professorship At St. Lawrence

CANTON - St. Lawrence University President Daniel F. Sullivan has announced the appointment of Professor of Canadian Studies Robert W. Thacker to a Dana Professorship.

Dana Professorships were established to recognize distinguished full professors at St. Lawrence and are the highest honor awarded to faculty members. All faculty members participate in selecting Dana Professors, through an election process. The title is held until retirement.

Thacker has been a member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1983. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, he earned a master's degree from the University of Waterloo and the Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. An expert on Canadian culture, especially literature, Thacker is the editor of The Rest of the Story: Critical Essays on Alice Munro (1999) and was awarded a grant from the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., to support research on the only Munro biography that has ever had the cooperation of the author, Alice Munro: Writing Her Lives, published in 2005. Research for the book was also supported by a Molson Fellowship awarded to Thacker. He is a former editor of The American Review of Canadian Studies; received the 2003 Edith and Delbert Wylder Award from the Western Literature Association; and was given an Arts in Academics award by the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts. Winner of the Owen D. Young Outstanding Faculty Member award as voted by the senior class in 2002, as well as the J. Calvin Keene Award in 2006, Thacker has been associate dean for academic advising since 2005.
