A List 2/28/05 AUTHOR RICK BASS PART OF SLU WRITERS SERIES CANTON – Rick Bass, author of 18 books of fiction and non-fiction, will speak and read from his work in an appearance at St. Lawrence University on Thursday, March 10, at 8 p.m. in Eben Holden. The event, part of the St. Lawrence Writers Series, is open to the public, free of charge. Often dubbed a "nature writer" by critics and bookstores, Bass published his first novel, Where the Sea Used to Be, in 1998. His first short-story collection, The Watch, won the 1988 PEN/Nelson Algren Award. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Bass worked as an oil and gas geologist in Mississippi before moving to the Yaak Mountains of Montana, where he is a board member of a number of environmental organizations, including the Yaak Valley Forest Council, Montana Wilderness Association, Cabinet Resource Group and Round River Conservation Studies. His second novel, The Diezmo, is scheduled to be released in May. It is based on the Mier Expedition, "one of the most absurd and tragic military adventures in the history of Texas," a country and a state, as the author writes, that was "born in blood."
