Scholar-Activist Richard Joseph To Speak At
St. Lawrence

CANTON - Richard Joseph, John Evans Professor of International History and Politics at Northwestern University, will give the CLR James Lecture in African Studies at St. Lawrence University, on the topic "Freedom Work: Journey of a Caribbean-American Scholar and Activist." The talk, which is open to the public, free of charge, is on Thursday, November 8, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall, Room 218.

He directed the African Governance Program at the Carter Center and coordinated elections missions in Zambia and Ghana, as well as peace initiatives in Liberia. A longtime member of the Council of Foreign Relations, Joseph is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards including a Rhodes Scholarship, a Kent Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2002-03, he held visiting fellowships at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the National Endowment for Democracy, and he is the author and editor of dozens of scholarly books and articles.

Joseph has devoted his scholarly career to the study of politics and governance in Africa, with a special focus on democratic transitions, state-building and state collapse, and conflict resolution. In this talk, he will discuss key moments in his personal and professional life from witnessing the independence movement in Trinidad and Tobago, to participating in the U.S. civil rights movement as a college student and engaging as a scholar and activist in Africa since 1968.
