Alumni Reunion Weekend May 29-June 1 At St. Lawrence
CANTON - More than 1,000 graduates and guests are expected to participate in Alumni
Reunion Weekend activities at St. Lawrence University, from Thursday, May 29,
through Sunday, June 1. Among the highlights of the weekend is the presentation of
Alumni Citations to four outstanding graduates and the Sol Feinstone Humanitarian
Award to a fifth.
The Sol Feinstone Humanitarian Award is presented to a graduate who, through
devotion of his or her resources or personal effort, has demonstrated deep
commitment to the advancement of the freedom of people to pursue and attain
personal, professional and economic freedom. This year's recipient is Canton
resident Nellie Coakley, who earned a master's degree at St. Lawrence in 1985.
A nurse in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, Coakley has been active locally and
nationally as an advocate for and volunteer with veterans, especially
those who have been wounded.
Alumni Citations, awarded to graduates of the University for long-term and
exemplary service to the University or for exemplary professional accomplishment
or community volunteer activities, will be presented to Sanford "Sandy"
Schram '71, a professor in the Graduate School of Social Work and Social
Research at Bryn Mawr College; Rabbi Susan Talve '75, founding rabbi of the
Central Reform Congregation in St. Louis, Missouri; Barbara Philipp '75,
pediatrician and founder of the Breastfeeding Center at Boston Medical
Center; and William "Willie" Janeway '85, regional director
for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Region 3 office,
which serves the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster
and Westchester.
The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 31. A variety of educational,
recreational and social events are planned for the weekend, including seminars
with University faculty, staff and alumni; tours of the campus and excursions
to area attractions; a talk by President Daniel F. Sullivan; and the traditional
Parade of Classes.
