CANTON – The awarding of Alumni Citations to four outstanding graduates and the
Sol Feinstone Humanitarian Award to a fifth will highlight Alumni Reunion Weekend
at St. Lawrence University, June 2 through 5.
Alumni Citations, awarded to graduates of the University for long-term
and exemplary service to the University or for exemplary professional
accomplishment or community volunteer activities, will be given to retired NASA
aerospace engineer Frederick Zito '47; Lisbon, New York, native and retired Glens
Falls surgeon David Thompson '54; custom-metal fabricator Donald Gratz '55
(posthumously); and biological field-research teacher Daniel Bisaccio '76.
The Sol Feinstone Humanitarian Award, presented to a graduate who,
through devotion of his or her resources or personal effort, has demonstrated
deep commitment to the advancement of the freedom of people to pursue and attain
personal, professional and economic freedom, will be presented to Kenya native Joseph
Lekuton '91, a teacher at The Langley School in Virginia. Author of the highly
acclaimed recent children's book Facing the Lion: Growing up Maasai on the African
Savanna, Lekuton is actively involved in numerous community development projects in
rural Kenya, returning there every summer and during school vacations. Through his
work with several non-profit organizations, he has provided more than 100 nomadic
children with education scholarships, established the Karen Boarding School, and
constructed a water system delivering clean water to a dozen villages in northern Kenya.
The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 4. A variety of educational,
recreational and social events are planned for the weekend, including seminars
with University faculty, staff and alumni; tours of the campus and excursions to area
attractions; a talk by President Daniel F. Sullivan; and the traditional Parade of
