From: President Daniel F. Sullivan

Subject: Theodore “Fritz” Renick

Date: March 1, 2003

I must share the sad news that our colleague, Professor Emeritus of
Education Theodore “Fritz” Renick, was stricken and has died this
morning in Syracuse, New York.

Fritz Renick joined the St. Lawrence faculty in 1966 and taught in the
education department until his retirement in 1989. Fritz was described
by colleagues as “the steady guiding force, the heart, the soul, the
backbone and the spirit” of our counselor education program. Members of
the North Country school counseling profession described him as their
role model, someone who understood the daily pressures and rewards of
the best guidance counseling possible. Dr. Renick had a special
research interest in models of counseling for disadvantaged students and
worked closely not only with regional school districts, but with social
service agencies as well.

Many of us also knew Fritz as the bass player for the renowned North
Country Preservation Jazz Band, a group dedicated to keeping New Orleans
jazz style flourishing. Ann and I enjoyed them immensely at several
campus events, and appreciate they have fans all over country.

I know that you join Ann and me in offering deepest sympathies and
support to his wife, Wanda, who survives him. He is also survived by a
sister, Patricia Dabney, of Danville, and a niece and nephew.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at the
First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Michael Catanzaro, pastor,
officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Petersburg, Illinois.
There are no calling hours; arrangements are with the Lawrence Funeral
Home in Canton.

Those wishing to honor memories of Fritz with gifts may make them
to the First Presbyterian Church in Canton, or to the Fritz Renick
Memorial Fund at North Country Public Radio in Canton.
