TRUSTEE REDLICH GIVES $1M TO SLU TO EQUIP SCIENCE FACILITY
CANTON - St. Lawrence University Trustee Sarah E. Johnson Redlich, of Burlingame,
California, has given $1 million to the University to be used for equipping the
Johnson Hall of Science, now under construction and scheduled to open in the fall.
In 2002, Redlich gave St. Lawrence what was then and is still the largest gift in
its history, $10 million for improvement of science facilities. The University broke
ground in 2005 for the $36.9 million, 115,000-square-foot facility for biology,
chemistry, biochemistry, neuroscience and psychology which is the first phase in
a four-phase, $60 million program of science and mathematics facilities improvements.
In recognition of her leadership gift, the facility has been named the Johnson Hall
of Science.
University President Daniel F. Sullivan said, "Sarah gets in a big and deep way the
systemic character of our natural environment, and she knows how critical it is for
St. Lawrence graduates long into the future to be players in science and mathematics
fields and as citizens who will need to make tough but smart choices. Her commitment
to enabling us to seek and achieve real excellence in science education is truly
inspiring. This new gift is another powerful boost to St. Lawrence. We are incredibly
grateful."
Redlich states, "In what I consider to be one of the most exciting times in the
history of this University, I am filled with pride as I anticipate the approaching
opening of the Johnson Hall of Science. This project continues to fuel the
momentum experienced everywhere on campus and by anyone who comes to visit
the school. I realize how important it is for the University to have the
resources to furnish this new facility with the most technologically advanced
and up-to-date science equipment available. This will enable St. Lawrence to
offer unparalleled programs for its students, as well as aid the faculty and
students with research and publication projects. It is a testament to President
Sullivan's determination and strong leadership that this project, thought not
so long ago to be a far-off dream, has come to fruition. I made my original
gifts, and this subsequent gift, to make it possible for St. Lawrence to rank
among those offering the most compelling undergraduate science programs of any
college in the United States. My belief in the continuing progress of this
institution and the knowledge that we are well on our way to achieving this
vision is at the heart of my decision to add to my original gifts."
Redlich, a 1982 graduate of St. Lawrence, is the vice chair of the steering committee
for Momentum St. Lawrence, a campaign to raise $200 million by December 31, 2010.
A trustee since 1999, Redlich is involved with a number of non-profit organizations
in an advisory capacity or at the board level, including the San Francisco Lyric
Opera and The Ethel Walker School. She has a strong interest in conservation and
is on the advisory board of Conservation International. Redlich earned her
St. Lawrence degree in biology and has been an active volunteer for the University,
as a career advisor and in fund-raising.
In 2005, Redlich gave the University
$1.85 million to support an endowed professorship in the sciences and the
St. Lawrence Fund. Redlich's recent $1million gift to equip the Johnson Hall
of Science is in addition to her previous gifts to the University.
