SLU'S 'AMERICA READS' PROGRAM A SUCCESS

CANTON - A St. Lawrence University program which allows
work-study students to tutor reading in local elementary schools
is a success for all concerned, according to the results of a
survey recently conducted on the program.
Now in its second year, the project is partially funded
through federal appropriations for the "America Reads" program.
During the 1998-99 academic year, 40 St. Lawrence students
were tutors in the fall semester and 45 in the spring. Participating
schools were St. Lawrence Central, Gouverneur, Hermon-DeKalb,
Edwards-Knox and Madrid-Waddington; 105 students participated in the
fall and 85 in the spring.
Tutors and teachers in the participating schools were surveyed
by David Prue and Lauren Shuman, graduate students working with program
coordinator William Fox, associate professor of education. Both groups
reported the experience to be very worthwhile. Comments from tutors
included, "This has been one of the most amazing experiences I've had
at St. Lawrence."
A teacher who responded to the survey commented, "It would be
difficult to teach without them. Your students have become an important
part of our classroom community."
Participants in the program undergo training, and receive
transportation to and from the schools.
