CANTON-SLU RACE WEEKEND BENEFITS ORGANIZATIONS

CANTON – St. Lawrence Valley Renewal House and Camp Sunshine have each received
$2,000 donations as a result of the Second Annual Canton-St. Lawrence University
Race Weekend, held April 30.
Events included the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Marathon, the St. Lawrence University
Half-Marathon and the Wellness Initiative 5K Race. A total of 177 runners and walkers
participated and over 100 area citizens and St. Lawrence University students volunteered
on a cool and rainy North Country day. Runners from the local area, Canada and from
as far away as Texas and Florida participated. One runner from Florida used the day to
complete his 193rd marathon. A complete list of race results can be found on the Race
Weekend website: www.stlawu.edu/marathon/.
Camp Sunshine is a retreat in Casco, Maine, for children with life-threatening illnesses
and their families. The program is free to all and families come from around the world to
attend the camp. The executive director of Camp Sunshine is 1994 St. Lawrence graduate
Matthew Hoidal.
The St. Lawrence Valley Renewal House for Victims of Family Violence is a non-profit
agency providing support and shelter for victims of domestic violence. Renewal House offers
24-hour crisis intervention; individual and group counseling; personal and legal advocacy;
children and youth services; safe housing; educational programming; and basic information
and referral.
The race planning committee would like to thank all the runners, volunteers and race
sponsors. Event organizer Bill Burns, director of counseling services at St. Lawrence,
stated, "An event like this does not happen without a large number of people coming together
to work toward a common goal. Whether you volunteered on race day, ran or walked in one of
the events, were an event sponsor, or came out and cheered on the participants, thank you
for taking part in the day."
The Third Annual Canton-St. Lawrence University Race Weekend will be Saturday, May 6,
2006. For more information, contact Burns at 315-229-5391 or wburns@stlawu.edu).
