CANTON-SLU RACE WEEKEND LOGO DESIGN WINNER ANNOUNCED
CANTON - Mike Corse, of Canton, is the winner of the 2006 Canton-St. Lawrence
University Race Weekend logo design contest. For submitting the winning entry,
Corse receives free entry to the race of his choice, $100 in cash and the use of his
design on race shirts.
The event is Saturday, May 6, and includes the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Marathon, the
St. Lawrence County Dunkin' Donuts Half-Marathon and the St. Lawrence University Wellness
Initiative 5K Race. The races will be followed by a day of entertainment on the
St. Lawrence University campus, as part of the University's annual Spring Fest celebration.
All interested runners are invited to participate. The marathon is a one-loop course,
while the half-marathon is an out-and-back course, following the first quarter of the
marathon route. Walkers are welcome and an early starting time will be available for
walkers and marathoners wishing more time. Runners can register for the race of their
choice online at www.Active.com. Hard copies of the registration form can be obtained
by emailing wburns@stlawu.edu, or by calling Bill Burns at 315-229-5391. The race
Web site is located at www.stlawu.edu/marathon/.
Profits from the event will go to two area organizations:
- St. Lawrence University Habitat for Humanity has been raising awareness and money in
the area to build a student-sponsored home, in partnership with other local chapters;
it is hoped that construction will begin in the spring. The annual Habitat spring-break
Collegiate Challenge trip took place in Slidell, Louisiana, an area affected by hurricanes.
- St. Lawrence Valley Renewal House for Victims of Family Violence is a non-profit
agency providing support and shelter for victims of domestic violence. Renewal House
offers 24-hour crisis intervention; individual and group counseling; personal and
legal advocacy; children/youth services; safe housing; educational programming; and
basic information and referral.
