SLU PROFESSOR TO DISCUSS BOOK ON WOMEN PRIESTS

CANTON -- The Friends of Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries
will celebrate the publication of Assistant Professor of Religious
Studies Kelley Raab's book When Women Become Priests: The Catholic
Women's Ordination Debate with a reception on Friday, December 8,
at 4 p.m. in the Josephine Young Room of Owen D. Young Library.
Raab will speak about her book at the event, which is open
to the public.
Raab's book was published earlier this year by Columbia
University Press. Publishers state that the book "explores the symbolic
implications of women at the altar, providing rich insight into issues
of gender, symbolism and power." Further, the book "addresses critical
issues about the effect of a female priest on the parishioners she would
serve, on the sacrament of communion and on the significance of the
symbolism of Jesus that priests maintain during certain ceremonies."
Interviews with women in the Episcopal priesthood are included to
support Raab's views.
A member of the St. Lawrence faculty since the fall of 1999,
Raab is a graduate of Colgate University, with a master of divinity
degree from the Chicago Theological Seminary, a master's degree from
the University of Chicago and the Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa.
