QUEBEC HYDRO PROJECT TOPIC FOR SLU PRESENTATION
CANTON - St. Lawrence University students who participated in an independent study of a
proposed - and rejected - hydroelectric project on the Little Whale River in Northern
Quebec will present a slide show and talk on their findings on Wednesday, September 28, at
7 p.m. in the Winston Room of the Student Center on campus. The event is open to the public,
free of charge.
During the summer, Jonathan Angus '06, Rochester, NY; Barrett Miles '07, Chatham, NJ;
and James Passanisi '06, Nahant, MA, worked on an independent project with Director
of Outdoor Studies Philip Royce and Brad Bassi '01, paddling the Little Whale River,
which had been slated for damming to generate hydroelectric power. After protracted
legal battles and discussions, the project was abandoned in the mid-1990's. The team
paddled 200 kilometers to the river's mouth at Hudson Bay, and following the expedition,
toured existing hydro facilities in the region.
