Pynchon Named Vice President for Advancement
St. Lawrence University has named Thomas R. Pynchon, who has more than two decades of experience working at St. Lawrence, vice president for University Advancement, effective July 1.
Pynchon will oversee all aspects of the University’s Advancement division, including overall management of principal and major gifts, planned giving, donor relations, corporation and foundation relations, advancement operations, and annual giving and Laurentian engagement.
Pynchon began working at St. Lawrence in 1992 as the director of planned giving. He came to St. Lawrence from the University of Vermont, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981. Most recently, he has served as senior associate vice president for University Advancement and director of principal gifts and director of international philanthropy. Pynchon has also served in leadership roles in the previous two comprehensive fundraising campaigns.
“In this new role, I look forward to working with President (William) Fox and the strong and committed advancement staff, and continuing to build on my many connections with our faculty and staff, and the North Country community,” Pynchon said.
Pynchon replaces Laura Ellis, who will become senior advisor to the University for philanthropy and will relocate to New York City to focus on advancement work in the New York City area for St. Lawrence.
During his 22 years of service at St. Lawrence, Pynchon has maintained strong connections in the local community, volunteering for several nonprofit organizations. He currently serves as president of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton.
Pynchon is married to Carol Pynchon, who is a Village of Canton trustee. All three of their children attended Canton Central schools. Drew earned a masters in education from St. Lawrence in 2014, and David received his bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence in 2013. Their daughter, Lindy, is currently a student at the University of Vermont.
