SLU Hosting Urban/Rural Preservation Symposium

CANTON - St. Lawrence University will host a three-day symposium on urban and rural preservation, focusing on sustainability of the "built environment," September 9 thorugh 11.

Symposium events and speakers will explore how sustainability is achieved through the preservation of historic urban and rural architecture and settings, in harmony with nature as well as people. The symposium features speakers from historic cities in Canada, Italy and Slovakia which are on the UNESCO list of World Historic Heritage Sites, as well as North Country experts.

Events, all open to the public free of charge, are:

- Sunday, September 9, All-day field trip to Great Camp Santanoni in the Adirondacks. For details, reservations or directions contact: jkittler@stlawu.edu.

- Monday, September 10, the exhibition "Living In Harmony With the Past: Authentic Interiors of Banská Štiavnica," opens with a reception in the Richard F. Brush Gallery at 7 p.m.

- Tuesday, September 11, a workshop on historic building and preservation crafts will be held in the Sullivan Student Center from 2 to 4 p.m., outside if weather permits. The workshop will include demonstrations of traditional building and preservation techniques by experts from Florence, Italy; Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia; and Camp Santanoni, among others.

- Tuesday, September 11, Michel Bonnette, a UNESCO expert from Quebec City, will give a talk titled "Living In Harmony With the Past," at 7 p.m. in the Winston Room of the student center. His talk will be followed by a panel discussion, with Francesco Lupi, an architect from Florence, Italy; Katarina Voskova, of Slovak University of Technology's architecture faculty; Adirondack Architecural Heritage Executive Director Steven Engelhart; and master craftsman Michael Frenette.
