Math Contest At SLU Won By Team From Canton
CANTON - A team from Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton won the 64th Annual
Pi Mu Epsilon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest, held recently at St. Lawrence
University and sponsored by the University's mathematics, computer science and
statistics department and the local chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honorary.
Members of the winning team from Canton are Andrew Horwitz, Brittany Jones, Seth
Rader, Mark Shatraw and Catherine Sheard.
The Gold Medal in individual competition went to Sheard, of Canton, who also
won the Gold Medal in 2006 and 2007; the Silver Medal to Danielle Easton, of
Gouverneur; and the Bronze Medal to Mike Scancarello, of Potsdam.
Seventy-one students from 15 area high schools participated in the contest,
which consisted of an individual examination and team-challenge problems.
A St. Lawrence University scholarship, named in honor of Emeritus Professor
of Mathematics Robert Cromie, for up to $5,000, is designated for the top-ranking
senior, Sheard, or one of four alternates (Easton; Scancarello; Kevin Beadoin,
Massena; and Brad Schuyler, Clifton-Fine), should they decide to attend the
University. Scholarships are also designated for the three top-ranked
non-seniors, Andres Mcintosh, Parishville-Hopkinton; Debapria Das, Potsdam;
and Horwitz, should they decide to attend St. Lawrence, in amounts of
up to $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively.
In team competition, there was a three-way tie for second place, between
Gouverneur, Massena and Potsdam. Therefore, no third-place prize was awarded
in team competition.
The highest-ranking member for each team was as follows: Dylan Martin,
Brushton-Moira; Sheard, Canton; Brad Schuyler, Clifton-Fine; Patrick Reilly,
Colton-Pierrepont; Nathan Pila, Edwards-Knox; Easton, Gouverneur; Amanda
Pinkerton, Heuvelton; Cambray Merrick, Madrid-Waddington; Beadoin, Massena;
Eric Micelli, Morristown; Emily Claffey, Norwood-Norfolk; Brendan Merna,
Ogdensburg; Mcintosh, Parishville-Hopkinton; Scancarello, Potsdam; and Sara
Artus, St. Regis Falls.
The top 10 in individual competition were Sheard, Canton; Easton, Gouverneur;
Scancarello, Potsdam; Beadoin, Massena; Schuyler, Clifton-Fine; Alexander Brehm,
Potsdam; Mcintosh, Parishville-Hopkinton; Das, Potsdam; Horwitz, Canton;
and Mikayla George, Massena.
