CANTON TEAM WINS SLU MATH CONTEST
CANTON - A team from Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton won the 63rd Annual Pi Mu
Epsilon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest, held recently at St. Lawrence University
and sponsored by the University's mathematics, computer science and statistics
department and the local chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honorary.
Members of the winning team from Canton are Levi Busch, Kathryn Dean, Brittany Jones,
Ben LaFirst and Catherine Sheard.
The Gold Medal in individual competition went to Sheard, of Canton, who also won
the Gold Medal in 2006; the Silver Medal to Andrew Gilbert, of Parishville-Hopkinton;
and the Bronze Medal to Jon Peryer, also of Parishville-Hopkinton.
Fifty-eight students from 12 area high schools participated in the contest, which
consisted of an individual examination and team-challenge problems.
A St. Lawrence University scholarship, named in honor of Emeritus Professor of
Mathematics Robert Cromie, for up to $5,000, is designated for the top-ranking
senior, Gilbert, or one of four alternates (Peryer; Christopher Shantie,
Massena; Jennifer Tynan, Massena; and Daniel Maguire, Parishville-Hopkinton),
should they decide to attend the University. Scholarships are also designated
for the three top-ranked non-seniors, Sheard, Canton; Emily Claffey,
Norwood-Norfolk; and Ebaa Abdelfadeel, Ogdensburg, should they decide to
attend St. Lawrence, in amounts of up to $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively.
In team competition, Parishville-Hopkinton Central School ranked second and Massena
Central School, third.
The highest-ranking member for each team was as follows: Emma Leahy, Brushton-Moira;
Sheard, Canton; Tyler Boscoe, Gouverneur; Amanda Pinkerton, Heuvelton; Cambray
Merrick, Madrid-Waddington; Shantie, Massena; Claffey, Norwood-Norfolk; Abdelfadeel,
Ogdensburg Free Academy; Gilbert, Parishville-Hopkinton; Christopher Lewis,
Salmon River Central; Josh Fitzgerald, St. Regis Falls Central; and Zachary
Auclair and Evan Bujold (tie), Tupper Lake Central.
The top 10 in individual competition were Sheard, Canton; Gilbert,
Parishville-Hopkinton; Peryer, Parishville-Hopkinton; Claffey, Norwood-Norfolk;
Shantie, Massena; Tynan, Massena; Maguire, Parishville-Hopkinton; LaFirst,
Canton; Abdelfadeel, Ogdensburg; and Busch, Canton.
