SLU MATHEMATICS CONTEST WON BY CANTON TEAM

CANTON – A team from Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton won the 61st  
Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest, held recently 
at St. Lawrence University and sponsored by the University's mathematics, 
computer science and statistics department and the local chapter of 
Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honorary.
	Members of the winning team from Canton are Ben Hammond, Ben LaFirst, 
Travis Pierce, Adam Weeks Marano and Andrew Palmateer.
	The Gold Medal in individual competition went to Marano, of Canton, 
for the third straight time; the Silver Medal to Kathryn Montgomery, 
Madrid-Waddington; and the Bronze Medal to Shea Zellweger, Parishville-Hopkinton.
	Sixty students from 13 area high schools participated in the contest, 
which consisted of an individual examination and team-challenge problems.
	A St. Lawrence University scholarship, named in honor of Emeritus 
Professor of Mathematics Robert Cromie, for up to $5,000, is designated for 
the top-ranking senior, Marano, or one of four alternates (Montgomery, 
Madrid-Waddington; Zellweger, Parishville-Hopkinton; Tim Delles, Salmon 
River; and George Nelson, St. Regis Falls), should they decide to attend 
the University. Scholarships are also designated for the three top-ranked 
non-seniors, Palmateer, Canton; Aimee Krause, Norwood-Norfolk; and 
Hammond, Canton, should they decide to attend St. Lawrence, in amounts of 
up to $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively.
	In team competition, Madrid-Waddington Central School ranked second, 
and Norwood-Norfolk Central School third.
	The highest-ranking member for each team was as follows: Brushton-Moira, 
Pamela Fefee; Canton, Marano; Chateaugay, Kristi LaBare; Gouverneur, Daniel 
Langevin; Madrid-Waddington, Montgomery; Massena, Brandy Page; Morristown, 
Luke Smith; Norwood-Norfolk, Krause; Ogdensburg, Micaela Mitchell; 
Parishville-Hopkinton, Zellweger; Salmon River, Delles; St. Regis Falls, 
Nelson; and Tupper Lake, Byung-Hyuk Koh.
	The top 10 in individual competition were Marano, Canton; Montgomery, 
Madrid-Waddington; Zellweger, Parishville-Hopkinton; Palmateer, Canton; 
Delles, Salmon River; Krause, Norwood-Norfolk; Hammond, Canton; Nelson, 
St. Regis Falls; John LaShomb, Norwood-Norfolk; and Sean Acres, 
Madrid-Waddington.
