A List 4/14/03 CANTON TEAM WINS MATHEMATICS CONTEST AT ST. LAWRENCE CANTON - A team from Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton won the 59th Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest, held recently at St. Lawrence University and sponsored by the University's mathematics department and the local chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honorary. Members of the winning team from Canton were Sean Clemens, Lauren Hill, Miles Ledoux, Andrew Palmateer and Adam Weeks Marano. Sixty-seven students from 14 area high schools participated in the contest, which consisted of an individual examination and team-challenge problems. A St. Lawrence University scholarship, named in honor of Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Robert Cromie, for up to $5,000, is designated for the top-ranking senior, Ledoux of Canton, or one of four alternates (James Caruso, Heuvelton; Clemens, Canton; Cara Pierce, Lisbon, and Alex Sheppard, Norwood-Norfolk), should they decide to attend the University. Scholarships are also designated for the three top-ranked non-seniors, Marano, Canton; Andrew Brouwer, Potsdam; and Jason Charleson, Ogdensburg, should they decide to attend St. Lawrence, in amounts of up to $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively. The Gold Medal in individual competition went to Marano, of Canton; the Silver Medal to Ledoux, of Canton; and the Bronze Medal to Caruso, of Heuvelton. In team competition, Potsdam Central School ranked second and Heuvelton Central School, third. The highest-ranking member for each team was as follows: Brasher Falls, Tim Penderghest; Brushton-Moira, Nicholas Colby; Canton, Marano; Edwards-Knox, Jeremy Dovel; Gouverneur, Madeline Girard; Hermon-Dekalb, Samantha Smith; Heuvelton, Caruso; Lisbon, Pierce; Madrid-Waddington, Matthew Snider; Massena, Kiley Scott; Norwood-Norfolk, Sheppard; Ogdensburg Free Academy, Charleson; Potsdam, Brouwer; and St. Regis Falls, Kent Goodrow.
