SLU PROF WRITES BOOK FOR POLICE ON CONFLICT RESOLUTION
CANTON - Only 30 percent of all law enforcement calls result in an arrest.
A new book co-authored by a St. Lawrence University professor helps officers
learn to deal with the other 70 percent.
St. Lawrence University Assistant Professor of Education Peter D. Ladd is the
co-author of Conflict Resolution for Law Enforcement: Street-Smart Negotiating,
recently published by Looseleaf Law Publications, which covers conflict
resolution skills for professionals in all areas of law enforcement.
Ladd says that the book covers situations including harassment, vandalism,
shoplifting, domestic violence, parental responsibility, petit larceny,
physical threats and other issues faced daily by officers, and teaches
skills that help diffuse situations and avoid escalation.
Other authors, with Ladd, are St. Lawrence Adjunct Assistant Professor of
Education Kyle E. Blanchfield and Thomas Blanchfield, an emeritus professor
of criminal justice studies at Mohawk Valley Community College.
Ladd coordinates the certificate of advanced studies program in counseling in the
University's graduate school of education. In addition, he acts as the clinical
supervisor for the Tekanikonrahwa:kon Holistic Health and Wellness Program on
the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation. A graduate of Duquesne University with a
master's degree and Ph.D. from United States International University, he
joined the St. Lawrence faculty in 1976 and has written numerous books and
articles in the areas of counseling and conflict resolution.
