New Book By SLU Prof Meant To Empower Client In Mental Health Treatment

CANTON - A new book by a St. Lawrence University professor is aimed at putting the client first in the treatment of mental health conditions, encouraging professionals to see the client as the "unrecognized expert on their condition."

Person-Centered Diagnosis and Treatment in Mental Health: A Model for Empowering Clients, by Associate Professor of Education Peter D. Ladd and AnnMarie Churchill, has just been published by Jessica Kingsley Publications.

Clients with mental health conditions are often diagnosed and treated using a strictly medical model of diagnosis, with little input from the client themselves. This reference manual takes a person-centered, holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment, encouraging clients' collaboration.

Ladd coordinates the certificate of advanced studies program in counseling in the University's graduate school of education. In addition, he acts as the clinical supervisor for the holistic health and wellness program on the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation. A graduate of Duquesne University with a master's degree and Ph.D. from United States International University, he joined the St. Lawrence faculty in 1976 and has written numerous books and articles in the areas of counseling and conflict resolution.
