Potsdam Team Wins SLU Math Contest

CANTON - A team from Potsdam Central School won the 66th Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest, held recently at St. Lawrence University and sponsored by the University's mathematics, computer science and statistics department and the local chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honorary. The win broke a long-standing streak by Canton's Hugh C. Williams High School.

Members of the winning team from Potsdam are Madelyn Ball, Michael Burns, Sebastian Grimberg and Ruisheng Wang.

Forty-seven students from 11 area high schools participated in the contest, which consisted of an individual examination and team-challenge problems.

The Gold Medal in individual competition went to Burns, of Potsdam; the Silver Medal to Reginald Pierce, of Heuvelton; and there was a tie for the Bronze Medal, between Ball, of Potsdam, and Lara Clemens, of Canton.

A St. Lawrence University scholarship, named in honor of Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Robert Cromie, for up to $5,000, is designated for the top-ranking senior, Reginald Pierce, or one of four alternates (Ball, Clemens, Zach Stratton, Norwood-Norfolk; and Michael Gilbert, Parishville-Hopkinton), should they decide to attend the University. Scholarships are also designated for the three top-ranked non-seniors, Burns, of Potsdam; Connor Pierce, Heuvelton; and Grimberg, should they decide to attend St. Lawrence, in amounts of up to $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively.

In team competition, Heuvelton placed second and Salmon River, third.

The highest-ranking member for each team was as follows: Brasher Falls, Martin Fregoe; Canton, Clemens; Colton-Pierrepont, Axel Colin; Gouverneur, Ryan Devendorf; Heuvelton, Reginald Pierce; Madrid-Waddington, James Lavieri; Norwood-Norfolk, Stratton; Parishville-Hopkinton, Gilbert; Potsdam, Burns; Salmon River, Andrew Bromberry and Rakenhoktha Barnes; St. Regis Falls, Kenneth Prush.

The top 10 in individual competition were Burns, Potsdam; Reginald Pierce, Heuvelton; Ball, Potsdam; Clemens, Canton; Connor Pierce, Heuvelton; Stratton, Norwood-Norfolk; Grimberg, Potsdam; Gilbert, Parishville-Hopkinton; Bromberry, Salmon River; and Barnes, Salmon River.
