Canton Team Wins SLU Math Contest
CANTON - A team from Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton won the 65th Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest, held recently at St. Lawrence University and sponsored by the University's mathematics, computer science and statistics department and the local chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honorary.
Members of the winning team from Canton are Andrew Horwitz, Eli Koon, Mark Shatraw, Claire Sweeney and Emily Sweeney.
The Gold Medal in individual competition went to Koon, of Canton; the Silver Medal to Reginald Pierce, of Heuvelton; and the Bronze Medal to Shatraw, of Canton.
Sixty-three students from 13 area high schools participated in the contest, which consisted of an individual examination and team-challenge problems.
A St. Lawrence University scholarship, named in honor of Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Robert Cromie, for up to $5,000, is designated for the top-ranking senior, Shatraw, or one of four alternates (Patrick Reilly, Colton-Pierrepont; Horwitz, Canton; Andrew Darling, Massena; Chloe Whalen, Morristown), should they decide to attend the University. Scholarships are also designated for the three top-ranked non-seniors, Koon, of Canton; Pierce, Heuvelton; and Brian Siefert, Norwood-Norfolk, should they decide to attend St. Lawrence, in amounts of up to $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively.
In team competition, Heuvelton placed second and Colton-Pierrepont, third. The highest-ranking member for each team was as follows: Brasher Falls, Tyler
Chevier; Brushton-Moira, Nathaniel Eggleston; Canton, Koon; Colton-Pierrepont, Reilly;
Gouverneur, Tyler Boscoe; Heuvelton, Pierce; Madrid-Waddington, Gavin Acres; Massena, Darling; Morristown, Whalen; Norwood-Norfolk, Seifert; Parishville-Hopkinton, Andreas McIntosh; Potsdam, Marty LaFleur and St. Regis Falls, Danielle Fountain.
The top 10 in individual competition were Koon, Canton; Pierce, Heuvelton; Shatraw, Canton; Seifert, Norwood-Norfolk; Reilly, Colton-Pierrepont; LaFleur, Potsdam; Connor Pierce, Heuvelton; Horwitz, Canton; Darling, Massena; and Jacob Muller, Colton-Pierrepont.
