CANTON WINS MATH CONTEST AT SLU
CANTON -- A team from Canton's Hugh C. Williams High School won
the 56th Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest,
held recently at St. Lawrence University and sponsored by the
University's mathematics department and the local chapter of
Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honorary.
Members of the winning team from Canton were Lindsay Barton,
Kari Lock, Brian McCollum, Heather McKnight and Rachel Putman.
Sixty-six students from 14 area high schools participated in
the contest, which consisted of an individual examination and
team-challenge problems.
A St. Lawrence University scholarship, named in honor of Emeritus
Professor of Mathematics Robert Cromie, for up to $5,000, is designated
for the top-ranking senior, Lock of Canton, or one of four alternates
(Jason LaBella, Massena; D.J. Broadbent, Massena; McCollum, Canton; and
Andrew Pickering, Tupper Lake), should they decide to attend the
University. Scholarships are also designated for the three top-ranked
non-seniors, Kayla Ware, Brasher Falls; Chris Grant, Tupper Lake; and
Zoe Gardner, Hermon-Dekalb, should they decide to attend St. Lawrence,
in amounts of up to $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively.
The Gold Medal in individual competition went to Lock, of Canton;
the Silver Medal to LaBella, of Massena; and the Bronze Medal to
Broadbent, of Massena.
In team competition, Massena Central School ranked second and
Hermon-Dekalb third.
The highest-ranking member for each team was as follows: Ware,
Brasher Falls; Lock, Canton; David Truesdell, Edwards-Knox; Forest Moulton,
Franklin Academy; Tommy Scott, Gouverneur; Brandi Colton, Hermon-Dekalb;
Emily Kingsley, Heuvelton; Brandon Hall, Lisbon; Brooks Finnegan,
Madrid-Waddington; LaBella, Massena; Lauren Bouchard, Ogdensburg Free Academy;
Cori Wilhelm, Parishville-Hopkinton; Brandon White, St. Regis Falls; and
Andrew Pickering, Tupper Lake.
The top 10 in individual competition were Lock, Canton; LaBella,
Massena; Broadbent, Massena; McCollum, Canton; Pickering, Tupper Lake;
Colton, Hermon-Dekalb; Kingsley, Heuvelton; Ware, Brasher Falls; Heather
McKnight, Canton; and Cori Wilhelm, Parishville-Hopkinton.
