A List 4/26/99 MASSENA TEAM WINS MATH CONTEST AT SLU CANTON - A team from Massena Central School broke Canton's long-standing winning streak to claim first place in the 55th Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest, held recently at St. Lawrence University and sponsored by the University's mathematics department and local chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honorary. Members of the winning team from Massena were Eric Ashley, Dana Cairns, Anna Evans, Matt Macaulay and Ed Zysik. Fifty-seven students from 12 area high schools participated in the contest, which consisted of an individual examination and team-challenge problems. A St. Lawrence University scholarship, named in honor of Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Robert Cromie, for up to $5,000, is designated for the top-ranking senior, Zysik of Massena, or one of four alternates (Evans, Massena; Megan Lumb, Ogdensburg; Aliya Haq, Canton; and Macaulay, Massena), should they decide to attend the University. Scholarships are also designated for the three top-ranked non-seniors, Kari Lock, Canton; Michael Privman, Potsdam; and Casey Burt, Hermon-DeKalb, should they decide to attend St. Lawrence, in amounts of up to $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively. The Gold Medal in individual competition went to Zysik, of Massena. Lock, of Canton, and Evans, of Massenam, tied for the the Silver Medal in individual competition, and Lumb, of Ogdensburg, won the Bronze Medal. In team competition, Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton ranked second and Ogdensburg Free Academy third. The highest-ranking member for each team was as follows: Lock, Canton; Jennifer Yonkoski, Franklin Academy; Tommy Scott, Gouverneur; Burt, Hermon-DeKalb; Emily Kingsley, Heuvelton; Brian Clark, Madrid-Waddington; Zysik, Massena; Lumb, Ogdensburg; Cori Wilhelm and Enrico Becerra, Parishville-Hopkinton; Privman, Potsdam; Stephanie Gray, St. Lawrence Central; and Denis Labar, St. Regis Falls.
