KELLY JOE PHELPS TO PERFORM AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON -- Acoustic country-blues guitarist and singer Kelly Joe Phelps is
scheduled to appear at St. Lawrence University on Monday, January 29, at
8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. The performance is open to the public, free of charge.
From his first independent recording, "Lead Me On" in 1994, Phelps'
wide-ranging style has been embraced by listeners. Playing a flattop guitar
modified for lap-style, Phelps has toured extensively and has appeared on a
number of national radio programs, including "The Prairie Home Companion."
His latest recording, 1999's "Shine Eyed Mister Zen," was picked by Amazon
as one of the year's best recordings. One of its critics noted, "Phelps has
all of the earnestness of a singer-songwriter without the overbearing
holier-than-thou-ness that infests so many of them. It's a testament to his
skill as a musician that he lets the music speak for itself."
Phelps' appearance at St. Lawrence is supported by the Birdsong
Endowment for Music, established in 1999 to bring visiting musicians or
musical groups to campus to enhance music education.
