Garden 'Work Parties' Planned For Permaculture Project At St. Lawrence
CANTON - Volunteer "work parties" are planned for anyone from the community interested in participating in construction of a permaculture garden at St. Lawrence University.
A permaculture garden, called Fruit for the Future, is a student-initated project, to be located behind Commons College, at 78 Park Street. Goals for the project include making it visually appealing, sustainable and productive, yielding seasonal fruits, nuts and herbs for human consumption and also providing habitat for beneficial birds, insects and other animals. The garden is being planned according to permaculture design principles and grown using organic and sustainable methods. A long-term goal of the project is to have the garden develop into an outdoor classroom, and have a connection to the Canton community through workshops, lectures and events held on the site.
Events will take place on Sunday, April 29 (spreading compost), and Sunday, May 6 (planting day), from noon to 4 p.m. No experience is necessary and all tools will be provided. Volunteers may wish to bring their own work gloves and are encouraged to dress in clothes suitable for the tasks.
