GAYLE PEMBERTON IN SLU WRITERS SERIES

CANTON - Gayle Pemberton, called "the most singular African-American
essayist to have appeared on the scene since the death of James
Baldwin," will read from her works at St. Lawrence University on
Thursday, September 20, at 8 p.m. in Herring-Cole. The event, part
of the St. Lawrence Writers Series, is open to the public, free of
charge.
Pemberton is an essayist who works to articulate a perspective
which is solitary and highly personal but which also acknowledges her
vital connection to the African-American community. Her latest book,
The Road to Gravure: Black Women and American Cinema, is forthcoming
from Norton.
She is also the author of a play, and numerous essays on
American culture, higher education and teaching. An award-winning
teacher, Pemberton has held teaching positions at several universities,
including Columbia, Northwestern and Princeton, and is currently
professor of English and African-American Studies at Wesleyan University in
Connecticut.
For more information about the series, contact the English
department at St. Lawrence, 315-229-5125.
