Minor In Peace Studies Now Offered At St. Lawrence University
CANTON - St. Lawrence University has a new, interdisciplinary minor program in peace studies, whose purpose is to "investigate a variety of concepts of peace and to explore the potential for nonviolent methods of building social, political and economic justice."
Students wishing to minor in peace studies would take an introductory course in the program; three courses from various departments that will be cross-listed into the minor; and a "capstone course" integrating their studies across these different courses. Cross-listed courses may not specifically deal with peace or nonviolence; they may, for example, explore topics such as violence; conflict; the dynamics of power; social change; or the biological or psychological roots of violence.
There are over 160 higher learning institutions offering peace studies programs in the United States and over 500 colleges around the world.
Program coordinator is Associate Professor of Philosophy Laura Rediehs.
