PEACE CONFERENCE TO BE HELD AT ST. LAWRENCE JAN. 28-31

CANTON - A peace conference, called "The Real Situation: A Peaceful 
Anti-War Uproar," will be held at St. Lawrence University January 
28 through 31. All events associated with the conference are open 
to the public, free of charge.
	The keynote address will be given by Lester Edwin Ruiz on 
Tuesday, January 28, at 7 p.m. in Eben Holden, on "Cultures of 
Peace: Perspectives, Problems, and Prospects." A panel discussion, 
on religion, peace and violence, will follow his talk.
	Formerly a professor of theology and culture and associate 
dean for graduate programs at the New York Theological Seminary and 
associate professor of peace studies at International Christian 
University, in Tokyo, Japan, Ruiz has written and lectured widely 
on peace and social change; nationalism and social movements; and 
theology, culture and politics. He has been active in such 
organizations as the World Order Models Project, the International 
Peace Research Institute, International Institutes for Peace 
Education, and other local advocacy groups for justice and peace. 
Ruiz is on the editorial committee of Alternatives: Global, Local, 
Political, and is co-editor, with Richard Falk and R.B.J. Walker, 
of the series "Global Horizons," published by Routledge.

	Wednesday, January 29 - Panel discussion on "War on 
the Environment: The Facade of U.S. Environmentalism, the Face of 
US War," 4 p.m., Eben Holden; panel discussion on "The Big Picture: 
Total War, Globalization, and Evil," 7 p.m., Eben Holden.
	Thursday, January 30 - Panel discussion on "Women 
Protesting Violence," 4 p.m., Formal Lounge, E.J. Noble University 
Center.
	Friday, January 31 - Book-signing by Assistant 
Professor of Global Studies John Collins and Visiting Instructor 
of Sociology Ross Glover, editors of Collateral Language: A User's 
Guide to America's New War, 3 p.m., Brewer Bookstore; a peace rally 
and concert, 7 p.m., Eben Holden.
