ST. LAWRENCE ANNOUNCES PRESIDENTIAL DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

CANTON -- A new scholarship program has been developed by
St. Lawrence University to encourage further diversity in
the student body, and thereby ultimately enhance educational
benefits for all students.
Presidential Diversity Scholarships, which will be
available starting with the Class of 2004, are intended to
facilitate the enrollment of more students from backgrounds
traditionally underrepresented at St. Lawrence. Specifically,
students of African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic-American
and Native American backgrounds will be eligible for the
scholarship, of $15,000 per year. Any additional financial need
will be met with a competitive financial aid package from St. Lawrence.
Announcing the program, Dean of Admissions and Financial
Aid Terry Cowdrey said, "St. Lawrence has always been committed
to examining a variety of cultural perspectives in courses across
the curriculum. By encouraging students from traditionally
underrepresented ethnic backgrounds to enter St. Lawrence and play
central roles in campus life, the Presidential Diversity Scholarship
program will, by extension, enhance the University experience for
all students."
The new program complements the recent gift from Class of
1939 alumnus Kirk Douglas, establishing a scholarship fund for minority
students.
St. Lawrence has also announced that all Gates Millennium
Scholars who enroll at the University will have the opportunity to
enhance their educational experience with funding for up to three
summers of independent research with faculty members. A stipend will
provide for living expenses and cover earnings students would otherwise
have had through a summer job. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program
is funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and
allows students to compete for scholarships that will replace the loan
portion of their financial aid packages.
