SLU PARTNERSHIP OFFERS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OPPORTUNITY

CANTON - About 120 minority high school students will be at St. Lawrence
University June 28 through July 2, experiencing life on a college campus
through a program designed to encourage them to stay in high school and
continue to college.
The Pre-Collegiate Opportunity Program (PCOP) will involve students
from two high schools in the Bronx; a community-based program in Washington,
D.C.; Salmon River Central School; and schools in Rochester and Syracuse.
The major objectives of the program are to instill and reinforce the attitude
among minority students that pursuing a college education is both an
achievable and necessary goal, and to assist the students in developing some
of the skills required to undertake the endeavor.
The summer session involves students in ninth and tenth grades. They
will participate in academic classes in biology, English writing and computer
science, as well as afternoon workshops on pursuing a college education.
St. Lawrence faculty and staff serve as instructors, and University students
are program counselors and residence staff.
Through the academic year, PCOP involves faculty visits to the partner
schools, for advisement and teaching, and visits by alumni of the schools who
are St. Lawrence students, for peer counseling. St. Lawrence's PCOP was
established in 1989, with support from The Pew Charitable Trusts.
