PCB CONTAMINATION FOCUS OF SLU TALK
CANTON - "Health Effects and Route of Exposure to Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)" is
the topic of a lecture by David Carpenter, a professor at the Environmental Health and
Toxicology Division of the School of Public Health at SUNY Albany, on Tuesday, April 11,
at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall (Room 218) at St. Lawrence University. The
event is open to the public, free of charge.
PCBs are industrial compounds that are very persistent in the environment and in the
human body. These compounds are dangerous, causing cancer, neurobehavioral effects,
disruption of the immune and endocrine system and other health effects. While the best
documented route of exposure is consumption of contaminated foods, especially fish, new
evidence indicates that inhalation of these semi-volatile compounds is also an important
route of exposure. Results from studies at Akwesasne and other PCB-contaminated sites
will be presented.
Carpenter is the host of a 30-minute public health information show called "The Public
Radio Health Show," carried on more than 170 stations nationwide, including the
Armed Forces Radio Network and Voice of America. Prior to joining faculty at the
University at Albany, Carpenter was a research physician at the Wadsworth Center for
Laboratories and Research.
