'PAULA,' BASED ON ALLENDE MEMOIR, TO BE STAGED AT SLU

CANTON -- An adaptation of the Isabel Allende memoir Paula will be
staged at St. Lawrence University on Wednesday through Saturday, April 4
through 7, at 8 p.m. each evening in Gulick Theatre. The event is open
to the public, free of charge, but tickets are required. They are
available at the box office April 2 through 6 from 1 to 5 p.m., or call
the box office at (315) 229-5748.
The memoir Paula was written during the one-year period from
Allende's daughter Paula's diagnosis with porphyria (a rare genetic disease)
to her death, in 1992. It was the 50th year of Allende's life, a time of
profound transition. Both the play and the memoir are an examination of
Allende's life, through three generations of Chileans whose personal and
familial trajectories cannot be separated from the tumultuous history
of Chile.
The play is centered around Paula, who lies in a coma. Her mother
sits at her bedside writing the stories of generations of her exceptional
family, because "no one can live without memories." Allende's spiritual
and family history are interwoven with the history of Chile. As adapted
and directed by Adjunct Instructor of Religious Studies Victoria Rue,
the play uses music, dance and video. The choreography is by Linda
Marshall. Music from Chile and other parts of South America is arranged
by Assistant Professor of Music George Torres and will be performed live
by Conjunto San Lorenzo, a music department ensemble.
The production is stage managed by Kate Estock, assistant stage
manager is Ann Harrigan. The set design has been created by Molly Eness,
with lighting by John Larrance.
