Poet Patricia Smith In St. Lawrence University Writers Series

CANTON - Patricia Smith, whose book Blood Dazzler chronicled the human, emotional and physical toll exacted by Hurricane Katrina, will speak and read from recent work in an appearance at St. Lawrence University on Thursday, March 10, at 8 p.m. in the Common Room of Sykes Residence Hall. The event, part of the University's Writers Series, is open to the public, free of charge.

Smith is the author of ?ve acclaimed poetry volumes. Blood Dazzler was a ?nalist for the 2008 National Book Award; Teahouse of the Almighty was a National Poetry Series selection and winner of the ?rst-ever Hurston/Wright Award in Poetry. The winner of a Pushcart Prize, Smith has had work published in numerous literary journals and anthologies; she has also been a featured poet on HBO's "Def Poetry Jam" and has performed three one-woman plays. She is the author of Africans in America, a companion volume to the groundbreaking PBS documentary, and the children's book Janna and the Kings.
