SLU STUDENTS' RESEARCH HAS REAL-LIFE EFFECTS

CANTON -- Paper used in copying machines across the
St. Lawrence University campus is now a more environmentally
"friendly" product, thanks in part to research and recommendations
from students in an environmental studies seminar.
	Four students in Professor of Environmental Studies Alan
Schwartz's spring seminar examined a number of ways the campus
could be "greener" in its practices. They researched options for
environmentally sound (high post-consumer recycled content;
process-chlorine-free; manufactured regionally) copy paper and
made recommendations for its purchase.
	Initially, it was determined that the purchase of an entire
truckload of the recommended paper, Roland New Life DP 100 from
Graphic Paper New York, would be too costly to purchase. But after
students contacted a sales representative from the firm, the company
agreed to split a truckload shipment (half with the paper the
University had been using and half with the recommended paper), bringing
the cost down and allowing the University to move toward making the
campus more environmentally sound.
	"My students have been very motivated and excited," Schwartz
commented, "knowing that their research might have real consequences."
He added that he and the students appreciated the support of Vice President
for Finance Kathryn Mullaney, Director of Campus Support Services Ted
Coviello and Central Warehouse Manager Ruta Ozols gave to the project.
	Students in the seminar are Brian Banton, Brunswick, Maine;
Victoria Engel, Hudson, New York; Melissa Henrichon, Rutland, Vermont;
and Michael Newton, Marblehead, Massachusetts.
