Goddess Sculptures Explained In 'Yoginis' Talk At St. Lawrence
CANTON - "Scattered Goddesses: Travels with the Yoginis" is the title of a talk by Padma Kaimal, on Tuesday, October 4, at 3 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Fifteen sculptures that were once part of a single, 10th-century goddess temple in
southeastern India now reside in 11 separate museums across North America and Western Europe. Kaimal's forthcoming book, also titled Scattered Goddesses: Travels with the
Yoginis, provides the stories behind the sculptures, examining the objects and the context from which they came, as well as the complex motivations behind their export, purchase and display.
Kaimal is associate professor of art, art history and Asian studies at Colgate University, specializing in the history of goddess worship in India and history of the art of Asia.
