JUDITH ORTIZ COFER PART OF SLU'S WRITERS SERIES

CANTON - Essayist, short-fiction writer, novelist and poet Judith 
Ortiz Cofer will speak at St. Lawrence University on Thursday, 
October 3, at 8:15 p.m. in Eben Holden, as part of the St. Lawrence 
Writers Series. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
	A native of Puerto Rico, Ortiz Cofer teaches at the Franklin 
College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia. Among 
her works are The Latin Deli, a collection of essays, fiction and 
poetry that received the Anisfield Wolf Award; the story collection 
An Island Like You, which won the first Pura Belpre Award and was 
named a Best Book of the Year 1995-96 by the American Library 
Association; and Silent Dancing, awarded a PEN/Martha Albrand 
Citation in non-fiction. Her work has been anthologized in The 
Best American Essays and The Norton Book of Women's Lives, among 
others, and it has appeared in Kenyon Review, Prairie Schooner and 
others.
