'African-American Heritage' Is Theme For Noon Organ Recital At St. Lawrence
CANTON - "Our African-American Heritage" is the theme for the next organ recital at the lunch hour in St. Lawrence University's Gunnison Memorial Chapel, featuring Musician-in-Residence Sondra Goldsmith Proctor and the Ad Hoc Singers, at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, February 25. Parking is available adjacent to the chapel.
Those attending are encouraged to bring their lunch to eat while enjoying the music.
In recognition of February as Black History Month, the recital features the music of Florence Beatrice Price and familiar spirituals in old and new settings. Price (1887-1953) is the first African-American woman recognized as a major composer. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, she spent most of her career researching and writing the old familiar spirituals down so that their important role would be recognized and remembered.
Joining Goldsmith Proctor for this performance are the Ad Hoc Singers, Alexandra Jacobs, Peter Jensen-Moulton, Lansing Laraway, Julia Pomainville and Laura Ramsey.
